Raspberry season.

A detoured Thursday drive took me by a u-pick raspberry farm that I never knew existed. I'm alllll about u-pick establishments... especially when they involve berries of any variety. Na and I went back a few days later to handle business. It was crazy windy so she didn't last quite as long as I was hoping for. She did manage to eat the berries faster than I could pick them though and probably downed an entire pint before we even made it to the car so it was definitely a win. I ended up going back with a friend the next day to satisfy my jam-making-berry-quota. My freezer is now stocked with THE BEST (and easiest to make) jam and raspberry picking has been scratched off our fall to-do list.

It's so cute how she's starting to piece together which foods are associated with which season. When we were leaving the berry field she said, "Mama we can't pick strawberries! It not strawberry season. Just apple and raspberry season now". Then she got a little teary eyed and wanted to know when summer was coming back. Poor girl, I'm afraid she may have a bit of a hard time with winter this year, she doesn't seem at all pleased by the prospect of snow and ice. That makes two of us. Guess we'll just have to take a some warm weather getaways to help us make it through the depths of winter (are you reading this Chris? Hint hint, nudge nudge ;)

I used THIS recipe for the jam (the same one I used for Strawberries earlier in the season) and just substituted raspberries for strawberries and it turned out excellent. Best of all is it doesn't contain any pectin and I didn't bother with the boiling of the jars or anything because we'll eat it faster than it can spoil (which is about a month in the fridge and a year in the freezer fyi).
^^^ She was pretending to be a dog here... a dog that did tricks for raspberries.

^^^ Hot jam and fresh eggs. Kind of unrelated but that tiny little egg was courtesy of our sweet Ms. Oreo Creamside (aka my favorite chicken... shhh!) who just started laying. Hooray!

  1. Ok I want to live where you live!! The only thing I find on my detours are cows and barren fields... maybe some cowboys every now and then.

  2. Have you read her the book Over and Over by Charlotte Zolotow? It's extremely tender and precious with gorgeous illustrations. It explains to a little girl how everything we love about the seasons comes back...over and over. It was my favorite as a kid, and I still love it.
