That time we went on a date.

Last Sunday the mister and I went on a day date. It was our eighth date since Navi has been born and it was pretty lovely. My mom came over to our house, played entertainer (or entertainee?) to our sweet girl and we hit the road.

I had kind of forgotten how much I enjoy driving. I loved making the drive up to the lake to see Chris when I was in high school. I'd take the back roads, hop in my little convertible (a far cry from my current minivan situation), listen to loud music and take corners much too fast. It was an hour drive that kind of felt like a little therapy session for the soul. Later on when we got married, I commuted an hour away for my last two years of college. It was mostly highway driving without a whole lot of things to look at but even that drive didn't bother me. And now... I totally dread just driving to the grocery store. Navi hates the car so much that even a ten minute drive is like an Olympic event. Seriously. I don't blame her of course, I wouldn't want to be strapped down in a car seat either, but man oh man that girl has made me detest the car. I digress.

Anyway, the car ride was the majority of our date since it was a two hour round trip. I love driving with Chris, we talk about things. Life things- both of the big and small variety. We clear our minds, make each other laugh and sometimes we just enjoy each other's quiet. And the magical destination awaiting us at the end of our dreamy drive? Whole Foods of course ;) Fancy, huh? We spent too much money on groceries, ate a hot-plate dinner in the parking lot (the café seating was full) and then marched right back inside for some gelato (chocolate sea salt caramel for me and orange cream for him). Hey, Whole Foods gelato! You rock my world. Seriously. We held hands walking out to the car and for a few hours we felt like teenage us, and it was pretty grand (twenty something us is grand on a totally other level, but teenage us was pretty awesome too). We enjoyed another hour long car ride back home and when we walked in the door I was greeted by a joyful "Mama!" and the sweetest open-arms-toddler-running-welcome I have ever seen. A perfectly wonderful afternoon, for sure. Hey, husband... reason #23923800032 that I love you? You make the grocery store feel special.
^^^Here is a gem of a photo to document our special grocery store date. And in case you were wondering, this is Chris's signature move when I say "hey, lets take a picture!". Need some proof? Here's a doozy of a shot from 2006 when we were just a couple of babies...

  1. Date nights are the best--even if you are just going to the grocery story! :) I can count on one hand the number of dates Martin and I have been on since Everdeen was born...we need to work on that!

    1. Tell me about it, us too! Its definitely a challenge (at least for us) to find "couple time" apart from "parenting time".... we're working on it though... one date (every couple of months) at a time haha

    1. Thanks, Jenna! I'm so hoping that car travel gets better soon... I'd love to be able to take mini-trips with the three of us with only a minor level of vehicular induced anxiety haha. Until then, our Whole Foods dates will just have to do ;)
